Snapshots along with Singing as Ethiopians Observe Thanksgiving
Countless individuals of colorfully attired participants assembled in central Addis Ababa for the traditional Irreecha event during recent days.
This thanksgiving celebration is observed by the Oromo, Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, and is held at the end of the country's primary rainy season.
Each year, participants come together around holy rivers and lakes to express gratitude to their higher powers for the lush vegetation that the rains have provided.
"I've been celebrating this celebration for the previous nine years," stated 25-year-old Moata Abdulmajid.
"To me, this event embodies my heritage, it showcases the pride and greatness of my people."
Gentlemen, females, the senior citizens and the youth all take part, ornamented in striking clothes and jewellery.
They chant, move rhythmically, tell tales and arrange freshly cut foliage and blossoms in the water - representing existence, rebirth and optimism.
Global Presence
Irreecha brings in people from all regions of Ethiopia, visitors fly in from around the world.
"I attended last year - the experience was amazing, so magnificent, I brought my children with me now," said one visitor, from Northern Ireland.
"It is amazing. Everybody greets you, all attendees offers affection and expresses hospitality."
Celebration Timeline
The initial day of the celebration occurred on Saturday in the capital. On the following day, festival-goers journeyed to a nearby town, a settlement near the main city.
Although this celebration has its foundations in traditional beliefs, it is now practiced by the majority of the community, irrespective of their religion.

In the recent years, the figure of participants attending the event has expanded substantially. This is partly due to the rise of social media, where various youth record their attire, dance moves and vocal performances during the gathering.
